Abstract
Land remains an important natural capital for every individuals, and because of this, it is not unusual that
there is land conflict globally, especially in developing countries where a huge population depends on
agriculture for their livelihood. This study evaluated the effect of farmland conflict on agricultural
production in Obot Akara Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. Using primary data obtained from a
sample of 150 respondents that were randomly selected through multistage sampling technique and
analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that most (30.7%)
of the respondents were between age bracket of 51-61 years, majority (58%) were male while 42% were
female with agriculture as their major occupation. Majority (52%) of the respondents had monthly income
range ofN1,000 –N30,000 per month. Also, on the effect of conflict on agricultural production it was
observed that agricultural production suffered the highest ranked (14.7%) followed by shortage of food
supply (9.3%). Hypothesis test showed that the percentage response of respondents was high and therefore
means that there is significant influence of farmland conflict on agricultural production in the study area.
Significant relationship where R-value (10.95) was greater that the critical R-value (0.139) indicating that
there had been significant influence of farmland conflict on agricultural production in the study area. The
study recommended that, government should make workable ideas and promulgate policies that will create
favorable atmosphere for conflict resolution, by organizing seminars and workshops in order to create
awareness on effect of conflict. Also community leaders should be educated on the effect of conflict on
agricultural production, since it is the main stay of the rural dwellers economy.
