Abstract
This study examined the technical efficiency and farm income intensification of cassava farmers in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with emphasis on both on-season and off-season production. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 300 farmers across the three agricultural zones of the state. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Stochastic Frontier Production Function, and the Tobit regression model. The results showed that most cassava farmers were female, aged 36–45 years, married, and educated, with over 15 years of farming experience. The mean technical efficiency was 76.4% for off-season farmers and 67.1% for on-season farmers, indicating higher efficiency in the off-season. Factors such as age, education, farming experience, and access to credit reduced inefficiency, while household size increased it. The income intensification index was higher for on-season farmers (0.5123) than for off-season farmers (0.4205), reflecting the advantage of favorable climatic conditions. The study recommends extension training, cooperative participation, timely input support, access to credit, and investment in irrigation and rural infrastructure to enhance cassava production and income.
